Windows 7: The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded + Lotus Notes

March 30, 2012

For the second time in a week I had a problem when trying to logon to a Windows 7 machine as a user that has not logged in on that machine before.
So first thing I did was have a look at the windows logs. Sure enough I can see the problem pretty quickly.

It seems that when lotus notes installs it’s default profile files it sets permissions so that all users cannot read the file. When you first login to a windows machine it copies the default profile to the new users profile. When windows cannot copy the lotus notes folder in appdata it stops and says tray again.

To fix this simply change the permissions on the lotus notes folder in appdata so all users have at least read access.
